The Armenian Genocide -
A Tragic Folklore

Harrison Sarafian

In 1915, the Ottoman Empire committed what would later give birth to the word, "genocide."

In the wake of this atrocity, the Armenian population was scattered across the Earth, forming new disparate diasporas who, despite their slight differences in culture, are all tied together through their connection to their motherland. Though their collective wounds have healed, the scars remain, as evidenced by their rich post-genocide folklore. As an American with Armenian blood, I feel compelled to explore it (even if only briefly, given the incredible range of diasporas and specific traditions). This website will focus more on the resulting blends of folklore than the event that spurred it.
